Cumbuco
Located 30 minutes from Fortaleza, world famous Cumbuco beach and the village that has sprung up alongside it is a top destination for the kitesurfing community.
Enjoying a generous sea breeze and good year-round weather it is the perfect place to learn and enjoy the sport. Beginners benefit from a salt water lagoon, protected from the waves of the open sea yet still making use of the strong breeze to power them through the water and into awe inspiring jumps of several metres.
Other watersports such as windsurfing, sailing and water skiing are popular in the area too.
Cumbuco beach is renowned for being one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil. Palm trees are abundant and each morning the sun climbs lazily out of the sea to illuminate the vast expanse of pure white sand.
The village itself has a relaxed atmosphere, yet still offers an impressive array of shops and services (eg. Banks, Bars, Restaurants, Supermarkets, Hotels etc) and is well connected by a local bus service and a shuttle to Fortaleza.
A feature of Cumbuco is the Sahara-style dunes which stretch out to the north west. The ideal way to get around in the village and surrounding area is by beach buggy, allowing you to drive across the expanse of dunes and right down to the shoreline. Beach Buggies are more popular than cars in Cumbuco.
The standard yellow design is available for visitors to rent and use as they please. Meanwhile, the more affluent locals proudly display their suped-up modified versions boasting extravagant bodywork and oversized tyres.
Sunsets are spectacular from atop the dunes in the evening.
For those looking for a slightly less demanding holiday, or perhaps for tranquil living, many of the beaches around Cumbuco are virtually deserted.
The Lagoa de Banana is just 5 minutes away from Cumbuco, a calm freshwater lake offering spectacular scenic views plus activities such as Banana Boat rides and Jet Skiing.
Horseriding is popular in Cumbuco, especially along the shoreline.
The village's gastronomy is surprisingly comprehensive, offering everything from freshly caught seafood (Lobster, Shrimp & Red Snapper) to meat barbecues, Italian pizza or pasta and French cuisine too.
